Sophomore Transfer Steps to Success

BSN PROGRAM - SOPHOMORE TRANSFER INFORMATION

The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) offers a transfer process for students who have not yet completed a bachelor's degree program.

All students transferring to the School of Nursing begin at the sophomore level, regardless of credit standing at their current institution. Transfer students complete three years of coursework at the University of Michigan.  While you do not need to be in sophomore standing to apply, please keep in mind that you are only able to transfer a maximum of 36-40 credits.

Prerequisites

Planning your prerequisites is imperative for your successful transfer University of Michigan School of Nursing Cachelor of Science in Nursing program. If offered admission, students may transfer up to 40 credits (including the required prerequisite courses). The required prerequisites are as follows:

  • English Composition
  • Introductory Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Organic Biochemistry*
  • Anatomy and Physiology*
  • Statistics*
  • Electives

Statistics, Organic Biochemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology courses must be taken within the past 5 years.

Competitive applicants have at least one semester of graded college-level coursework, including Anatomy & Physiology and/or Organic Biochemistry at the time of their application submission. Competitive applicants have earned a B (equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better in required prerequisite courses. Admitted transfer students must earn a C (equivalent to a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher for a prerequisite course to meet transfer requirements.

If offered admission, students will have until the beginning of fall term to complete all required prerequisite courses. While students may apply with prerequisites in-progress or planning to complete, we highly recommend students complete these courses as early as possible as to not interfere with their U-M on-campus summer courses.

Note to current U-M Ann Arbor students: Organic Biochemistry (BIOLCHEM 212) is only available during the fall term and Anatomy & Physiology (NURS 210 + NURS 211) is only offered during the winter term. Please meet with your current academic advisor and discuss your desire to transfer as early as possible to ensure there is space available in these courses. Please also review the Summer Courses Policy for Sophomore Transfer Students.

Supplemental Form

In order to ensure that students are on track to complete their prerequisite courses, we require all transfer applicants to submit a supplemental form. Applicants who do not complete their supplemental form by the February 1st application deadline will not be considered for admission. You may find the form below:

  • Sophomore Transfer Supplemental Form
    • To complete the supplemental form, refer to the guides below to check if your courses have already been deemed equivalent to courses at the University of Michigan. Please see the supplemental form for further directions regarding in-progress/future courses.

Course Equivalency Guide

Please refer to our School of Nursing Course Equivalency Guide to check if your non-elective prerequisite courses have been pre-approved for transfer credit.

To see if your electives are transferable, or to look up a course you didn't find in our course equivalency guide, please use the University of Michigan's Transfer Credit Equivalency Search.

  • When using the Transfer Credit Equivalency Search, select "School of Nursing" before you search.

Some courses may be listed as "X:Departmental" and say "transferable." These courses are approved for elective credits, but will need to be submitted through our course equivalency request form if you intend on using the course as a prerequisite.

While the equivalency databases are extensive, they are not exhaustive. Please see the next section for directions on how to submit courses for additional review..

Course Equivalency Request Form

If your course is not listed on the School of Nursing Course Equivalency Guide or the University of Michigan Transfer Credit Equivalency Search, your course may not have been submitted for evaluation to the University of Michigan School of Nursing. To determine if your course is equivalent, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Obtain the syllabi for the course(s) you are seeking to have evaluated. Syllabi can usually be obtained from your professor, the department, or the registrar's office at the institution. Appropriate syllabi will include the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Course credit hours
  • Learning outcomes
  • Grading scale
  • Schedule/outline of the subjects taught

Step 2: Use our Self-Review Guide to  to compare what is covered in your course to what we are looking for in equivalent courses
If around 90% of the content matches, there is a strong possibility that the course will transfer. Final decision for equivalency is made at the discretion of UMSN faculty and staff, and equivalency is not guaranteed.

Step 3: Submit your course(s) for review through the Course Equivalency Request Form.

  • If you are submitting multiple prerequisites for equivalency reviews, please submit a new form for each prerequisite.
  • You may upload multiple syllabi per form if you are requesting multiple courses to be reviewed in combination to meet a single prerequisite requirement.
  • Please note that courses are sent for review to faculty at the beginning of each month (ex; requests submitted August 1st - 31st are sent to faculty the first week of September). You will receive an email if your course has been approved or denied by the end of the following month (for instance, if a request was sent between August 1st - 31st, you should receive an email by September 30th)

Important Notes

  • Competitive applicants have completed either Anatomy & Physiology or Organic Biochemistry at the time of their application submission.

  • More competitive applicants have earned a B (equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better in required prerequisite courses and have several prerequisites completed at the time of application.

  • Transfer students must earn a C (equivalent to a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher for a class to meet prerequisite requirements.

  • Statistics, Organic Biochemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology courses must be taken within the past 5 years.

  • At least one semester of graded college coursework must be completed at the time of application.

  • Elective courses can be almost any transferable course you have taken: math, history, philosophy (etc). Students are encouraged to transfer courses that they may wish to contribute to a minor, or transfer your strongest courses. Please check the Transfer Credit Equivalency Search to ensure your course is transferable.

  • All external applicants are required to submit official transcripts as proof of successful completion of their prerequisite courses. Current U-M Ann Arbor students do not need to resubmit their high school transcripts or submit their current U-M transcripts. Prior to registering for any course, please check with the institution to ensure that you can obtain an official transcript upon completion. Please note that many MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) do not issue official transcripts; those that do not will NOT be accepted to meet prerequisite requirements or transferred in for credit.

  • For current U-M students, Organic Biochemistry (BIOLCHEM 212) is only available during the fall term and Anatomy & Physiology (NURS 210 + NURS 211) is only offered during the winter term.
