GO student scholarships

Every year, U-M School of Nursing Global Outreach (GO) scholarships increase students' opportunities for global study, civic engagement, and service. Preference is given to activities connected with UMSN curricular initiatives, but students may also apply for funds for volunteer or service learning programs.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at the U-M School of Nursing

  • Must remain an enrolled student throughout the entirety of proposed global activity

  • Proposed program must meet all university travel policy and Institutional Review Board requirements

  • Only one scholarship will be awarded to any individual student during the course of their degree program

Project categories

Work, internships and service

Students may apply for funding to participate in global work, internships or volunteering with hospitals and clinics (private or public), government agencies, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations. Nursing internships may be paid or unpaid, but students with paid internships must include their compensation amounts in their application. While students can apply to visit any country, it should be noted that preference will be given to low- or middle-income destinations in the western hemisphere because the U-M School of Nursing is a WHO/PAHO Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Health Promotion for the Americas.

Research

GO also helps fund nursing students who propose to engage in international research. The activity does not need to be for academic credit, but outcomes must be clearly stated. Well written proposals will be given preference.

Deadline

For winter 2018 travel, applications are due November 1, 2017.

For spring/summer 2018 travel, applications are due March 1, 2018.

Application

To be considered for a GO student scholarship, submit an application through M-Compass: Nursing: Global Outreach Scholarship.

Review process

A faculty committee will evaluate applications based on feasibility of the project proposed, relevance to career goals, record of academic achievement, and overall quality of the application. Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision within 30 days of submitting their application.
