Dr. Pence earned her clinical doctorate from Wayne State University. She completed her doctoral work on Motivational Interviewing to promote self-care in clients with COPD and continues to see the value in effective communication in both practice and in life. She is passionate about teaching and lifelong learning. As an NP, Dr. Pence has mostly treated geriatrics and adults with disabilities in their homes and community dwellings. Dr. Pence is expanding the populations she treats in practice and is working more with adolescents and young adults. As an Assistant Clinical Professor, her focus is hands-on learning and fostering a growth mindset environment for teaching and learning. Her developing area of research involves promoting optimal quality of life for those in various healthcare settings by fostering the use of optimal communication skills. When she is not working, Dr. Pence enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons. She also enjoys reading, dance, yoga, and music.

Teaching

Dr. Pence began teaching undergraduate nursing students in 2017 and has been UM since 2020. She has taught didactic theory in the classroom setting, clinical, seminar, and simulation settings. She believes strongly in using a multitude of instructional methods to reach all student learners, such as socratic method, traditional lecture, and flipped classroom. As a nursing instructor, Dr. Pence is grateful for the opportunities to pair textbook knowledge with real-life situational experience. Dr. Pence often asks students to reflect on clinical experience in the field in order to better grasp concepts from the textbook. Dr. Pence values academic advising and mentoring to promote the process of learning as well as student performance. She dedicates individual attention to each of her students to foster growth.
