During the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, the clinical instructor  DNP project focus was on transition of care in sickle cell disease adolescents and emerging adults. This topic was researched with a literature review and included meetings with experts, including creators of transition planning tools;sickle cell disease advocates; adult and pediatric hematologists; and other healthcare providers from two different institutions.  This project population focus started in 2017 at the beginning of the program.  A tracking tool was implemented for this particular population. A manuscript was written on the process and is currently in the process of editing to submit for publication.

Teaching

During the graduate teaching program at Wayne State University, LaToya Brown acquired experience with learning how to lead a class and outline discussion; leading a lecture; writing exam questions and developing a test blueprint; recording of lectures; and participation in skills and simulation lab with first, second, and third-year nursing students at the undergraduate level.  Throughout the graduate clinical courses, LaToya thoroughly reviewed and worked through multiple case studies and developed a PowerPoint presentation to present to fellow colleagues at the graduate level.  As a registered nurse, LaToya gained experience with mentoring nursing students on two different units at Michigan Medicine, as well as precepting of new nurses.  The pedagogy that embodies UMSN is “collaborative”, because it helps the students learn how to work with others collectively to prepare them to work with other healthcare providers as they enter the nursing field.
