Dr. Briggs began his career specializing in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular nursing. During his graduate education, he began to merge his interest in acadamia and clinical practice, where he specialized in the development and integration of teaching innovations in both the academic and professional setting. In the arena of teaching innovation, Dr. Briggs's most notable expertise focuses on the integration of the NCSBN Clinical Judgement Measurement Model into core practices of clinical teaching and stress management and resiliency training (SMART) to enhance nurse well-being and retention. Dr. Briggs’s hope is that one day SMART will become standard practice in all nursing curricula and orientation processes.

Teaching

From the beginning of his career at UMSN in January 2022, Dr. Briggs’s teaching has focused primarily on 1st-year Nursing Seminar and Nursing Therapies II clinical at the undergraduate level. Dr. Briggs has taught at every level of the BSN program, from freshmen to senior year focusing on medical-surgical specialties. Courses Dr. Briggs has taught include Nursing Seminar, Health Assessment Lab, Intro to Clinical Practice Lab, and Nursing Therapies I, II and III clinicals. Dr. Briggs is currently the Lead faculty for Medical-Surgical Nursing Therapies II professional nursing experience (PNE) courses.

Dr. Briggs has also been at the forefront of the integration of innovative teaching strategies into the clinical curriculum at the undergraduate level which utilize the NCSBN’s CJMM. Most notably, is his contribution to the development of the CJMM discussion tool, which is now utilized in several clinical courses across multiple levels of UMSN’s BSN program.
