Dr. Schilt-Solberg studies how adverse social contexts, including adverse childhood experiences, minority stress, and bereavement, shape substance use in young adults. His research examines how young people cope with adversity, how they perceive risk, and what motivates their health behaviors, with particular attention to sexual and gender minority communities. Drawing on national data sources such as Monitoring the Future and validated measures of coping and adversity he has helped develop, he has shown how early and ongoing adversity accumulates into substance use and emotional distress.
His current work focuses on young adults bereaved by overdose, a group whose grief is often stigmatized and unacknowledged. Working alongside these young adults, he is co-designing and testing a grief-responsive mobile health intervention that delivers support in the moments it is needed most, before substance use escalates. Across this work, his aim is to reduce substance use and narrow health disparities among young adults.

Teaching
Dr. Solberg possesses extensive teaching experience, encompassing both didactic and clinical settings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He fosters a strong mentoring environment, guiding undergraduate honors thesis students and serving on graduate student dissertation committees.
Dr. Solberg's teaching philosophy emphasizes three key pillars: transformational learning, reflective engagement, and narrative pedagogy. Through these approaches, he empowers students to achieve deep understanding and personal growth within nursing.
