Being a nursing student isn’t all about studying. Just ask Sarah Lauerman.
Sarah has loved singing her entire life. Studying nursing at Michigan has given her a chance to keep that passion going while preparing for her career.
A University of Michigan School of Nursing student in the BSN Class of 2029, Sarah joined the U-M Women’s Glee Club and found friends who shared her interest in music.
“I joined because I have loved singing my entire life and the club has such an amazing group of girls I wanted to be a part of,” Sarah said.
Glee has introduced her to students she might not otherwise meet in her nursing classes.
“I love having a community outside of nursing that allows me to express my interest in music and meet people of all different ages and majors,” she said.
This year, Sarah serves as Concert Deputy, helping prepare for the club’s fall concert. She’s excited to take on a leadership role and help organize the performances she enjoys.
The club has given her opportunities to perform at Hill Auditorium, sing Michigan’s traditional songs and participate in events around the community. Rehearsals and concerts also give her time to focus on something she loves alongside her coursework.
“Nursing school is very challenging, but Glee helps me to have a creative outlet and find a balance between studying/academics and personal interests,” Sarah said.
Her advice to prospective nursing students?
“I encourage all prospective nursing students to find and pursue passions outside of academics,” she said.
And Sarah is doing just that, preparing to become a nurse while making time for music and the people who make it fun to truly make the most of her Michigan experience.
