Statement from the University of Michigan School of Nursing Re: Federal Funding and Nursing Graduate Student Loan Changes

 The School of Nursing Building

The recent announcement by the United States Department of Education to exclude nursing from recognized professions and impose caps on graduate student loans for nursing students is deeply concerning. This action undermines the critical and irreplaceable role nurses play throughout the health care system.

Nurses are the foundation of patient care, providing clinical expertise and essential services across hospitals, clinics, community settings, and public health programs. At a time when our nation faces dire current and future nursing shortages, limiting educational access to this profession is short-sighted and detrimental to the health of individuals and communities around the country.

Restricting financial support for nursing education will place significant barriers in front of aspiring nurses and will particularly hinder the development of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including nurse practitioners and nurse midwives. These highly trained professionals are vital to expanding access to primary and specialty care. Capping graduate student loans will impede the pipeline of future nurses and jeopardize the quality and availability of health care for years to come.

The University of Michigan School of Nursing urges policymakers to reconsider this decision and recognize nursing as a critical, high-demand profession worthy of full educational support. Investing in nursing education is an investment in the health, safety, and well-being of every community.
