  • Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at the U-M School of Nursing
  • Must remain an enrolled student throughout the entirety of proposed global activity
  • Must have Student Associate status in the Center for Global Health (Please see the Student Association page on the Center's website for details)
  • Proposed program must meet all University Travel Policy and Institutional Review Board requirements

Project Categories

Internships

Students may apply for funding to participate in global internships with hospitals and clinics (private or public), government agencies, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations. Nursing Internships may be paid or unpaid, but students with paid internships must include their compensation amounts in their application. While students can apply to visit any country, it should be noted that preference will be given to low- or middle-income destinations in the western hemisphere because the U-M School of Nursing is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Health Promotion for the Americas.

Research & Service

GO also helps fund nursing students who propose to engage in international research or service as part of their degree program. The activity does not need to be for academic credit, but outcomes must be clearly stated. Well written proposals will be given preference.

Deadline

Applications are accepted anytime throughout the year on a rolling basis with awards being given to applications as they come in.

Application

To be considered for a GO student scholarship, submit all of the following items via email to Nick Metheny at metheny@umich.edu:

  1. Statement of Purpose (maximum of two pages, single-spaced, 12 point font) - Successful statements explain how the proposed activity will contribute to the applicant's academic program and his/her future career plans. Statements about proposed research must describe the project as well as discuss its rationale, objectives, design, methodology, and the projected outcomes of the experience. If the applicant plans to work with an established research project, a description of the organization and its activities must be included as well.
  2. Faculty Letter of Support - The letter must be submitted by a faculty member at the U-M School of Nursing and should explain how the proposed global experience will complement the applicant's academic goals.
  3. Budget - The budget proposal must include the total estimated cost of airport transportation, airfare, local transportation, housing, food, visa and other document fees, CDC-required immunizations, and HTH insurance fees. Because the GO scholarship will likely only cover a portion of the cost, the applicant should explain the source of the remaining funds needed.
  4. Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  5. Unofficial U-M Academic Transcript

Review Process

A selection committee composed of faculty and staff from GO will evaluate applications based on feasibility of the project proposed, relevance to career goals, record of academic achievement, and overall quality of the application. Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision within 30 days of submitting their application.
