Interests

  • Dementia identification/diagnosis
  • Health service use for cognitive impairment
  • Population-based outcome measurement for older adults living with dementia

Dr. Matthew Davis is a health services researcher who has additional training in data science.  His program of research evaluates the complex relationships between healthcare service availability (using geospatial information systems methods) and healthcare outcomes among the population of older adults living with dementia.  Dr. Davis’s research has been continually funded by the NIH since 2010 as a principal investigator and he has published more than 90 scientific articles.   His current work investigates variation in the identification of dementia and the population health impacts of severe weather exposure. Dr. Davis serves as the lead of the Research Resources Core of the University of Michigan’s Center to Accelerate Population Research in Alzheimer’s (CAPRA) and co-lead of the Research Data Analytics Core for the Michigan Embedded LHS Scientist Training and Research (MEL-STaR) Center.

Current Research Grants and Programs

  • NIH RF1 AG083768 (R01). Preventing Deaths among Older Americans with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Related Dementias Exposed to Hurricanes, role: Principal Investigator (Davis and Bell)

  • NIH P30 AG066582. Center to Accelerate Population Research in Alzheimer’s (CAPRA), role: Project Lead (Research Resources Core)

Teaching

Dr. Davis has taught statistics, epidemiology, data analysis, and health services research methods.  Currently, he is the lead instructor for Applied Biostatistics for Clinical Practice (HS700, School of Nursing), Applied Biostatistics for Health Researchers (LHS665, Medical School), and Analysis of Large U.S. Health Data (HS807).  HS807 is a graduate course that provides students with an overview of the principles, concepts, and methods of data management and analysis of national health data (including NHANES, MEPS, SEER, AHRF, NAMCS/NHAMCS).
