NURS 880 - Philosophical Influences and Theory Informed Science

This course is designed for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows in the health sciences. Students will discuss the philosophical foundations of science and their influence on theory building. Scientific philosophies regarding the nature of truth (epistemology), scientific paradigms, and methods of discovery will be explored. Students will learn about a variety of theories in nursing, behavioral, and social sciences that inform research in health and healthcare, and how the theoretical underpinnings guide development of conceptual models and frameworks for the students' emerging program of research. Students will learn the skills of scientific discourse, theoretical critiques, concept analysis, and development of a preliminary conceptual model/framework for their research.
