Dr. Bettencourt is a pediatric clinical nurse specialist and passionate advocate for nurses and nursing practice.  Her primary research focus is implementation science, specifically, exploring the factors influencing the research-to-practice gap in critical care settings, and testing implementation strategies targeting the interprofessional team to improve the uptake of evidence-based care.  Her previous research examined the association between nurse staffing and nurse work environments and burn patient mortality.  She is a recognized national burn nursing expert by the American Burn Association and the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.  Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Dr. Bettencourt completed a fellowship in the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania with Dr. Linda Aiken.

Dr. Bettencourt is an experienced educator, teaching various topics in nursing, leadership, quality improvement, and research to student and professional audiences.  She has experience teaching using high fidelity simulation, and is a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (PFCCS), and Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) instructor.  Dr. Bettencourt has successfully mentored Nursing and Health Education students at the Baccalaureate and Master’s levels.  In addition to the classroom setting, Dr. Bettencourt has been educational faculty for professional education courses at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) National Teaching and Advanced Practice Institute, the American Burn Association (ABA) International Meeting, and the Emergency Nurses’ Association (ENA).
