Martin Luther King Jr. Health Sciences Program

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane,” Martin Luther King, Jr. – Second National Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights, Chicago, March 25, 1966

Join the University of Michigan health science schools, colleges and units for a series of events dedicated to understanding and improving health equity for all. The U-M central campus theme for this year's MLK events is "Unravel.” It embodies what health professionals do each day, investigating the individual pieces that contribute to a person's or community's mental and physical health.

This is America Contest and Event

Childish Gambino’s "This is America" music video is a portrayal of controversies in the United States, many of which relate in some way to health and social justice. The 2018-19 MLK Health Sciences Planning Committee is charging campus undergraduate and graduate student organizations to submit a video presentation:

  • Describing at least one of the issues you identified in the video
  • Explaining how this issue might negatively impact health
  • Portraying how your group would address injustice in healthcare.

Warning:  This is America contains both gun violence and mature language.

Guidelines

  • Videos should be 5-7 minutes long
  • Proposals submitted should focus on interdisciplinary projects; collaborations across U-M health science schools/colleges are encouraged.
  • The potential impact of the project on health concerns should be addressed.
  • A one-page written proposal will be required to describe and support the content in the video submission.
  • Proposals can be submitted Tuesday, Oct. 2 - Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018.

Prizes:

The prizes (awarded directly to the organizations) are as follows:

  • 1st place - $500
  • 2nd place - $250
  • 3rd place - $100

Winners must be present to give a brief overview of their submission and to receive their award. In addition, the winning submission will be featured during the MLK Health Science Symposium on Monday, January 21, 2019.
