UMSN student selected as a Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar
Jenna Magallanes, a UMSN Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) student, has been selected as a Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar.
The joint program from Johnson & Johnson and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) was launched in 2007 to address a shortage in nursing faculty, while also enhancing diversity among nurse educators. It offers financial support, mentoring, and leadership development to graduate students from minority backgrounds who aspire to teach.
Magallanes is in UMSN's combined Midwifery/Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. She is actively involved in nursing and leadership organizations as a board member for the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and she serves on its division of research-workforce committee. Magallanes is also involved as an AACN Graduate Nursing Student Academy Advocacy Leader. In addition, she was recently appointed to the executive board as a nursing liaison for U-M’s Health Policy Student Association.
AACN typical receives 60 to 75 applications for the scholarship slots each year, but only about half a dozen scholars are selected.
