The overall goal of the program is to develop students' research and leadership skills, and encourage interest in master's or doctoral education. Specific expectations for students in the Honors Program include the following:

  1. Work with an assigned faculty mentor throughout the program.

  2. Generate a scholarly project, usually based on the research/scholarship of the faculty mentor. (The end product of the project is an honors paper and a poster presentation at the annual Dean's research day.)

  3. Attend all Honors Program meetings/forums and events.

  4. Participate in a designated community service event each year.

  5. Participate in leadership development programs within or outside the UMSN.

  6. Complete all required Honors Program coursework which includes two seminars, one in the sophomore and one in the junior year, and a graduate level course in senior year.

  7. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in each term.

  8. Meet with the Honors Program chair end at the of each academic year for an annual evaluation.

Details of the above expectations is found in the 2015-16 Honors Program Handbook.

  • Open-minded (good listener, respects differences, adaptable, fair)

  • Systematic (strategic, connects ideas, sees bigger picture, process oriented, intuitive)

  • Timely (efficient, takes initiative, reliable, responsive)

  • Truth seeking (independent, ask tough questions, firm minded, skeptical)

  • Motivated, energetic (goal-oriented, actively pursue objectives with intent and purpose)

  • Committed to lifelong learning (self-motivated knowledge seeker)
