School of Nursing Commencement Ceremony

Each year, the School of Nursing hosts a convocation ceremony specifically for our graduates to recognize and honor the effort put forth by the students who have earned their degrees.

Information for spring/summer/fall graduates

The School of Nursing only holds one commencement ceremony per year - in the spring, at the end of the winter semester. All students on the degree list of each nursing program for all semesters of the current year are invited to participate in this ceremony.

Faculty commencement registration

School of Nursing faculty are invited and encouraged to join in the celebration at the nursing commencement. Please RSVP by completing the faculty commencement registration form.

Who may participate in the nursing commencement?
Convocation participation and program inclusion is limited to students on the current year's tentative degree lists.

As outlined above, only those graduating in 2018 will be able to participate in the School of Nursing 2018 commencement ceremony and be listed in the nursing commencement program.

When will I receive information about commencement?
The School of Nursing graduation webpage will be updated periodically throughout the winter semester, with most information available in February and March. Notices and information will also be distributed via the appropriate School of Nursing student email groups.

When is the nursing commencement held?
The date of the nursing commencement coincides with the date of the university's spring commencement. This year's date is Saturday, April 28, 2018. The nursing ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. and will last approximately 2 hours.

Where is the nursing commencement?
The U-M School of Nursing’s Commencement Ceremony is held in Hill Auditorium

Will I have time to go to the university commencement?
Yes, in our history of nursing commencements, graduates are able to reach Hill Auditorium in time to assemble for procession into the Auditorium. The spring commencement in Michigan Stadium is anticipated to end at approximately 11:00 a.m., giving nursing graduates over an hour to reach Hill Auditorium. We do suggest that graduates make plans in advance for transportation between venues. The School of Nursing does not provide transportation between Michigan Stadium and Hill Auditorium, however the university does provide shuttle services throughout campus. Please review the shuttle map.

Are tickets needed for the nursing commencement?
No, tickets are not needed for the nursing commencement. 

How many guests are allowed per graduate?
There is no limit to the number of guests. However, the number of guests must be indicated on the commencement registration by the stated deadline. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Are there special seating arrangements for guests who are physically challenged?
Yes; you must indicate the number of physically challenged guests on the online commencement registration form to secure early admission passes to Hill Auditorium. Early admission passes that will secure easy access seating are only issued to graduates who request them via the registration form. On the day of commencement, easy access seating in Hill Auditorium will be on a first-come, first-served basis with the early admission pass presented to the attendant on duty.

What about hearing-impaired guests?
An American Sign Language interpreter will be present on stage for the duration of our ceremony.

What about parking?
Parking is available at Thayer Street and in front of Hill Auditorium for vehicles with handicap permits. There are no charges or fines for parking in area U-M structures and lots on this day.

Is there a pinning ceremony?
Graduates completing their BSN degree will receive a complimentary nursing pin when they cross the stage to be acknowledged with their nursing program cohort.

Where do I go with questions about nursing pins?
Pins and invitations may be ordered through Herff Jones (734) 663-9705, or the company of the graduate's choice. If you would like to order a pin or have lost yours, please contact Herff Jones directly.

Can I wear an honor cord?
Students with an accumulated GPA of 3.5 or greater for the fall 2017 term can wear a gold honor cord. Gold cords are available at the local outlets for academic attire.

Who is speaking?
The dean of the school and graduating representatives of each nursing degree program will give brief addresses.

Is there a reception afterwards?
Yes, a light, informal reception will be held in the Michigan League immediately following the commencement.

Is there a rehearsal for the nursing commencement?
There is no rehearsal for the nursing commencement. However, some instructions and logistical information will be sent via e-mail as the day draws nearer.

Will there be a photographer?
Photographs of all graduates and candidates are taken by Graduation Foto when they cross the stage during the nursing commencement ceremony. Participants will receive a free photo proof mailed by Graduation Foto to the address on the graduate’s photo card used during the ceremony and can order photographic prints for an additional fee. Photo cards will be distributed in student mailboxes the week prior to commencement. Individuals who have not received a photo proof within three weeks of the ceremony should contact Graduation Foto at (734) 677-3400. If you have questions regarding your photograph from the nursing commencement or ordering pictures, please contact Graduation Foto directly.

Will the nursing ceremony be videotaped?
This year UMSN will be live-streaming graduation through our youtube channel. A recording will be available to view after the commencement ceremony.

Can I say a few words during commencement?
Unfortunately, we only have time during the ceremony for class representatives to make an address on behalf of their program class.
