Scholarly Expertise / Activity
Interests:
- Guideline implementation
- Prevention of nosocomial infections
- Nursing sensitive patient outcomes
Ms. Kiyoshi-Teo’s long-standing professional interest has been identifying ways to improve quality of nursing and patient safety. She has explored many structural components to improve healthcare: the impact of market-driven healthcare, nurse-patient staffing ratio laws, and computerized provider order entry systems. Currently, her focus is on healthcare processes that improve patient safety. Ms. Kiyoshi-Teo has explored factors that influence adherence to ventilator-associated pneumonia guidelines by critical care nurses. Future research plans include examination of guideline quality, attitudes of the guideline user, and environmental contexts surrounding guideline implementation. Ms. Kiyoshi-Teo also is active in international nursing exchanges and collaborations. She publishes regularly in Japanese nursing journals and hopes to foster a collaborative global learning environment in her current role.
Current Research Grants and Programs:
- Ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention: Facilitators and Barriers of Provider Guideline Adherence. This dissertation research has been supported by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality F31 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, Sigma Theta Tau International Alpha Eta Chapter Research Award, and UCSF Century Club Fund.
Teaching
Ms. Kiyoshi-Teo has lectured and organized seminars for graduate students on research skills, academic communication skills, and roles of advanced practice nurses. Her teaching experience in the classroom setting includes serving as a teaching assistant for graduate-level courses, and she has worked as a clinical preceptor in many settings. In her current role, she plans to foster a learning environment where critical thinking, self-reflection, and proactive learning styles are encouraged.
