Ms. Murphy has expertise in perioperative nursing leadership practice, mentoring and facilitating professional education and development. As part of that expertise she has a focus on lean methodology and problem solving tools in the perioperative and peri-anesthesia environments. Implementing and sustaining safe and highly-reliable patient care systems in all aspects of the perioperative care with all members of the patient care team is an important aspect of this work. She routinely partners with professional disciplines within and external to nursing to create dynamic teams for improving patient care.

Ms. Murphy has spent the last 35 years as a leading proponent of the role of effective nursing administrative leadership in perioperative nursing practice; a goal which brought her to UMHS as Director of OR/PACU in 2006. Since joining the U-M School of Nursing, she has expanded this drive into numerous research goals focusing on effective staff mentoring, operating room staffing models and matrices, and the application of lean methodology to the operating room environment. She has been featured as a speaker at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Congress, ECRI, University Healthsystem Consortium, American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
