Sophomore transfer credit policy

BSN PROGRAM- SOPHOMORE TRANSFER CREDIT POLICY

The University of Michigan School of Nursing offers a transfer process for students who have already taken college courses, and wish to join our program. This is not a second degree bachelors program.

If admitted, students will begin the program in their sophomore year, with three years left to complete their BSN. You do not need to be at a sophomore standing to apply to our program, however, keep in mind that a maximum of 36-40 credits will transfer in, and students will still have to complete three years.

Transfer students start in the summer term. Once admitted to the nursing program, students will need to complete their first nursing courses, NURS 192, NURS 194 and NURS 196 during the summer.

Competitive transfer students will review the following information and documents:

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are key factors when planning your journey to transfer to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Sophomore-level transfer students may transfer around 36 credits, including the prerequisite coursework, if offered admission. Required prerequisites include the following:

English CompositionEquivalent to U-M ENGLISH 125
Introductory PsychologyEquivalent to U-M PSYCH 111
Developmental PsychologyEquivalent to U-M PSYCH 250
Organic BiochemistryEquivalent to U-M BIOLCHEM 212
Anatomy & PhysiologyEquivalent to U-M NURS 210 + NURS 211
StatisticsEquivalent to U-M NURS 218 or STATS 250
Electives (7-8 credits)Electives may be courses from the humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences and/or mathematics.

Statistics, Organic Biochemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology courses must be taken within the past 5 years. Students must earn a B or better for a class to meet prerequisite requirements.

While transfer students will have their first nursing classes (NURS 192, NURS 194 and NURS 196) during the summer term, all prerequisite coursework must be completed by the start of the fall term if offered admission.

While students may complete their prerequisites during the summer term, we strongly encourage you to try to complete prerequisites before the Summer term.

Current U-M students must take Organic Biochemistry (BIOLCHEM 212) during the fall term as a prerequisite to Anatomy and Physiology (NURS 210/211) which is only offered during the winter term.

Course Equivalency guide and Supplemental Form

The School of Nursing has evaluated many in-state and out of state colleges and universities for the exact courses that will transfer to meet our prerequisite requirements. To ensure that students are on track to complete these required prerequisites, we require students to fill out the supplemental form below.

  • Sophomore Transfer Supplemental Form
    • To complete your supplemental form, use the guides below to decide if your completed courses and/or courses you are planning to take are equivalent to the U-M prerequisite courses. You must list all courses you have taken and are planning to take in order to meet our prerequisites. The form must be submitted by the deadline for your application to be considered complete.

To see which prerequisite courses have already been approved as equivalent to U-M prerequisites (organized by institution), please refer to our Course Equivalency Guide.

To see if your electives are transferable, or to look up a course you didn't find in our course equivalency guide, please use the University of Michigan's Transfer Credit Equivalency Website

  • University of Michigan’s Transfer Credit Equivalency Website
    • When using the equivalency website, make sure that you select "School of Nursing" before you search. In addition, courses that are listed as "X:Departmental" and say "transferable," may be transferable as elective credit, but will need to be submitted for review if you are interested in using the course as a prerequisite.

What if my courses aren’t listed?

If your course is not listed on the Course Equivalency Guide or Transfer Credit Equivalency website, it has not yet been evaluated by the University of Michigan School of Nursing and may or may not transfer for credit. To determine if your course is equivalent, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Obtain the syllabi for the course(s) you are evaluating.
Course syllabi can usually be obtained from your professor, the department, or the registrar's office at the institution. An appropriate syllabus will include the course name and number, credit hours, learning outcomes, a grading scale, and an outline of what is taught.

Step 2: Use our Self-Review Guide to compare what is covered in your course to what is covered at the U-M course.
If your evaluated course matches 90% of the topics covered by the U-M course, it may be considered equivalent and can be submitted for review. If your course does not match in topics, you will need to find a new course to take.

Step 3: Submit your course(s) for review through the course equivalency request form.
Please use one form for each individual prerequisite you are hoping to meet. However, if you have taken multiple courses to cover one prerequisite, please list ALL courses and submit syllabi from each course.

Once you have submitted your course for review, you will receive an email with a decision of whether it is equivalent or not within 1 month.

Important notes for competitive applicants

All applicants are required to submit official transcripts as proof of successful completion of their prerequisite courses. Prior to registering for any course, please check with the institution to ensure that you can obtain an official transcript upon completion. Please note that many MOOCs do not issue official transcripts; those that do not will NOT be accepted to meet prerequisite requirements or transferred in for credit. Applicants will have reviewed the required prerequisite courses and will submit a supplemental form with their plan to complete those prerequisite courses by the deadline.

Current U-M students must take Organic Biochemistry (BIOLCHEM 212) during the fall term as a prerequisite to Anatomy and Physiology (NURS 210/211) which is only offered during the winter term. Statistics, Organic Biochemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology courses must be taken within the past 5 years. Students must earn a B or better for a class to meet prerequisite requirements.

Applicants are required to have either the Anatomy and Physiology or the Organic Biochemistry equivalent prerequisite course completed at the time of application. At least one semester of graded college coursework must be completed at the time of application. A minimum grade of a B (equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) must be achieved in each of the required prerequisite courses by the start of the first Fall term of enrollment in the School of Nursing. However a higher grade will make a more competitive applicant. More competitive applicants have several prerequisites completed at time of application.

Elective courses can be almost any transferable course you have taken: math, history, philosophy (etc). Students are encouraged to transfer in courses that they may wish to contribute to a minor, or transfer your strongest courses. Please check our transfer credit website to ensure your course is transferable.
