Meera Shastri

Second Career Student

Meera Shastri, from Chicago, Illinois, is in the University of Michigan School of Nursing’s Second Career Nursing Program. While working toward a bachelor’s degree in Spanish at a university in her home state, she took a course in career development and realized that nursing would be a natural fit for her interests, personality, and academic strengths. After completing her degree in Spanish, Meera worked for a year as a nurse’s aid to confirm her potential career path, then chose the University of Michigan for the accelerated 12-month Second Career Nursing Program.

“I knew the University of Michigan would provide a good environment to learn, focus on my studies, and get a good education.”

Meera appreciates the opportunity she has had to gain clinical experience at the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), a world-renowned medical institution. And she realizes the benefits of the U-M nursing program, which enables students to gain clinical experience early in their course of study, because it brings into perspective everything being learned in the classroom.

Meera plans to pursue opportunities that will allow her to combine her Spanish degree with nursing care. Looking toward the future, Meera says she envisions pursuing a nursing career in her hometown of Chicago, being available for international disaster relief, and eventually working toward her master’s degree in nursing.

“I knew it was going to be an intense program, but I came prepared.”
