University of Michigan School of Nursing

Remote Access

What is remote access?

Through the U-M Virtual Private Network (VPN), U-M students, faculty, and staff who have a valid U-M uniqname and password  can connect to the university network from external or personal computers. The VPN provides an encrypted connection for all network-computing needs. The Cisco VPN client, along with the appropriate U-M VPN profile, provides a secure computing experience when accessing a U-M network from a remote location or when using a wireless connection. If you already have the Cisco VPN Client installed on your computer, simply import the U-M VPN profile(s) for your operating system.

Once connected to the VPN, School of Nursing faculty and staff can access shared drives by following the instructions below. For other specific remote access needs, please contact the School of Nursing IT.

In other words, by following these instructions, you will be able to:
  • Download, install, and configure the UM Cisco VPN client
  • Download and run the drive map utility to map your network drives
  • Use the UM Cisco VPN client
  • See your mapped drives
