Simulation Room (1249I)

Overview

The Simulation Room is designed as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with one patient, Sim Man. Sim Man is a high-fidelity mannequin who replicates medical symptoms, the diagnosis and treatment of which enables students to practice their clinical skills and develop their assessment, critical thinking, and clinical judgment. The diagnostic tools available in the Simulation Room are manufactured by Welch Allyn and the Sim Man mannequin is distributed by the Laerdal Corp.

Running Simulations with Sim Man

Using Sim Man’s many features, faculty create scenarios - or simulations - that mimic common real-life medical situations. These simulations are then coded and the data is entered into the simulation software. The simulation can run automatically or “on the fly” keeping both students and their supervisors on their toes. Audio (.wav) files are included in the software to allow Sim Man to “talk” to his nurses during a simulation; faculty can also record their own communication.

Recording Simulations

The Simulation Room is equipped with three video cameras and three microphones. As students are participating in scenarios, their action and words can be recorded using the web based software provided by Education Management Solutions.

Control Room (1249J)

Located next to the Simulation room is the Control Room (pictured right), which has one-way glass to allow faculty to view students working in the Sim room. Laptops that manage Sim Man software, the debriefing system, and cameras are located here.

Debriefing Room (1249)

The Debriefing Room is a space where faculty and students join to discuss simulations. It is equipped with the following tools:
  • DVD/VHS combo unit
  • LCD projector
  • Laptop
  • Powered projection screen
  • Whiteboard
